Whitby’s wheels are finally in motion! After more than four decades of dreaming, the long-awaited Whitby Pump Track officially opened on Saturday 10th May — and the community turned out in force to celebrate.

Back in 1983, a group of local BMX riders had a simple vision: a dedicated track where people of all ages could ride, train, and build a community. Although the idea gathered momentum over the years, it wasn’t until now — 42 years later — that the dream became a reality.

Thanks to the passion of local people, generous support from Whitby businesses, and funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (managed by North Yorkshire Sport on behalf of North Yorkshire Council), that vision has finally come to life.

Saturday’s launch event brought a festival atmosphere to the town, with riders of all ages trying out the new track. There were food stalls, live music, and a thrilling demo by local elite mountain biker Danny Hart, drawing cheers from the crowd and inspiring the next generation of riders.

Scott Wicking, who has driven the development of the pump track project was delighted to finally see the project become a reality: The pump track has been 42-years in the making and the impact has been immediate and incredible. Kids are leaving their games consoles and getting on their bikes both before and after school. Mission accomplished!”

Councillor Phil Trumper, Ward Councillor for Whitby West, was delighted with the new asset for the town: “When I first saw the plans for the pump-track in 2019, I thought, what a brilliant idea. The community, led by Scott has come together, working with North Yorkshire Council to produce something that’s fantastic for local kids. It’s a brilliant asset for the town for the next 20-30-years.”

Neil Russell, Active Communities Manager at North Yorkshire Sport, praised the project’s community-driven roots:

“It’s fantastic to see the pump track open and being enjoyed by the community. When we were looking for local projects to invest in, this one stood out. There was a clear demand for a space where people could be active — and strong backing from local businesses and volunteers who gave their time to make this happen. It’s a brilliant example of what can be achieved when a town pulls together.”

The pump track build was made possible by the combined efforts of many. Special thanks go to local firms Rose Engineering and Wilf Nobles, who donated their time and expertise free of charge. The project also received generous support from Councillor Phillip Trumper, the Woodsmith Foundation, and Matthew Smartt from North Yorkshire Council’s Parks Team.

The new facility is more than just a place to ride — it’s a symbol of perseverance, teamwork, and the power of grassroots action. It joins a growing list of over 70 community projects supported by North Yorkshire Sport since 2023 — from facility upgrades and workforce development to improving accessibility for disabled people across the county’s green spaces.

After 42 years, the wait is over — and Whitby now has a pump track the whole town can be proud of.
