Our Trustees are the overall governing board for North Yorkshire Sport. It is an independent board which oversees, scrutinises and guides the charity’s work and makes decisions where appropriate to ensure our good governance.

Richard Carlton-Crabtree

Richard Carlton-Crabtree

Chair of Board of Trustees

Richard is a Director of the Oakdale Well-being Group; a Harrogate-based organisation providing therapy for children and young people.

Previously Richard worked as Business Development Director, and then Operations Director, with Insight Healthcare; the UK’s largest non-NHS provider of primary care psychological therapies.

Richard worked at the forefront of the Department of Health’s flagship ‘Improving Access to Psychological Therapies’ (IAPT) programme for ten years, having led the expansion of IAPT into 36 regions around the UK. He has written about mental health and psychological therapies, as well as broader health and social issues, for the Independent newspaper, and contributed to national forums shaping mental health policy in the UK.

Prior to joining Oakdale and Insight Richard trained as an economist and worked in the public sector with the Ministry of Defence and the Home Office.

Richard chairs the Board of Trustees and as Chair is the nominated Senior Independent Director.

Liz Burdett

Vice-Chair of Trustees

Liz has over 30 years’ experience in public service within the education, skills and employment sectors, working both in national and local government and in public and private sector agencies.

She has a keen lifelong interest in sport and physical activity and is passionate about the benefits of sport for both physical and mental health. She is particularly motivated to make a difference in work with disadvantaged young people, including young offenders, and in tackling dementia.

Liz now works primarily in voluntary roles which include as a Non-Executive Director of Your Consortium, a social enterprise supporting voluntary sector organisations to maximise investments and services in local communities, a Trustee of a Charity supporting local dementia services and a panel member for the Youth Justice Service.

In recent work as a freelance consultant, her clients have included Local Enterprise Partnerships, Local Authorities, Further and Higher Education, Voluntary Sector Organisations and Clinical Commissioning Groups.

Liz previously worked for North Yorkshire County Council leading on the strategy and planning of opportunities for young people aged 14-19, and as Area Director for the Learning and Skills Council, with responsibility for leading post 16 planning and funding in York and North Yorkshire. Her earlier career included roles with the Training and Enterprise Council and the Department of Employment.

Halima Khan

Halima Khan

Trustee

Halima has worked within the field of sport development for the past 16 years and has extensive experience from a community grassroots to strategic level.

Working with various sporting bodies, she brings experience from her previous roles at Sporting Equals, Rugby Football League, Yorkshire Sport Foundation, Bradford Council Sports Development, Badminton England and StreetGames.

Halima has also worked with Bermuda Cricket as a strategic advisor in developing their women and girls programme and, is also founder and Director of Opening Boundaries, a not-for-profit organisation which promotes sporting initiatives to campaign for gender equality and peace around the globe.

Halima sits on the Board of Triathlon England as a Non-Exec Director with a key portfolio on developing Diversity and Inclusion. She is also working with the European Hockey Federation in developing a Gender Balance code across their European federations.

Halima is a keen sports coach and enjoys a range of multisport. She is passionate about developing and creating social change through sport where communities can have access to a better physical, mental and social wellbeing of life without any fear of prejudice or discrimination.

Simon Clegg

Trustee

Simon is now a business owner working in Filey on the Yorkshire coast. He owns and manages a tea room, as well as a holiday letting business.

Prior to this, Simon spent 12 years working for PwC, reaching the grade of Senior Manager prior to leaving. He is a qualified chartered accountant and an experienced auditor. Whilst at PwC he specialised in the public sector, working with NHS organisations, local authorities, education institutions and charities nationally. As a specialised public sector accountant he has vast experience and expertise with many publicly funded and charitable organisations, and has worked with boards and Trustee groups supporting organisations with many different challenges.

Simon loves sport and in particular football, playing and watching. He is a keen skier and is developing a new found love for golf. He loves the outdoors and takes every opportunity to support and participate in activities on the Yorkshire coast.

Robert Hurren

Robert Hurren

Trustee

Rob is now retired, having worked in local government for over 40 years. He was a Director of Integrated Care working across Adult Social Care, the NHS, Housing and the Voluntary Care Sectors.

Following an internship at the International Labour Organisation in Geneva and voluntary work at Rudolph Steiner Foundation in Vaud, Switzerland he qualified as a social worker.

Rob comes from the North East but has lived in Harrogate since 1983. He has played non-league football both locally and abroad and has a strong interest in most sports. Rob has first-hand experience of seeing the benefits of sport for young and older people with challenging health conditions, ranging from people with dementia participating in football, and young adults with learning and/or physical disabilities getting involved in a wide range of sports.

Rob has a good knowledge of the North Yorkshire area, having previously worked at a senior level in adult social care for NYCC and as an Assistant Director at the City of York Council.

Abigail Young

Abigail Young

Trustee

Abigail has over 15 years’ experience of SME private sector business operation, strategy and management.

She joined a family-owned medical sales organisation as a marketing executive in 2007, working up towards the position of Business Director and a member of the board in 2017. She assisted with the sale and transition of the company to new owners in 2019, gaining wide ranging experience in business strategy, analysis and operations.

Abigail has a BA Hons degree in tourism management and has gained further academic qualifications including a Professional Diploma in Marketing.

Since leaving the private sector Abigail has assisted her husband in the setting up and operation of two property companies in the area of holiday letting and commercial rental.

Abigail is a passionate advocate for sport, regularly participating in triathlon and cycling events and encouraging her two daughters to participate in a wide range of sports in the York area, including horse riding, gymnastics and swimming.

David McLean

Trustee

David’s career has been largely in the Public and Third Sector. He is currently a Policy Manager with the National Fire Chief’s Council, providing policy and strategic advice to the Fire and Rescue Services in the UK and Home Office, the Education Department, and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

David also provides strategic and policy support for Inspired Youth Arts, a multi-award winning not-for-profit social enterprise.

His roles have included working in policy for Skills for Care, North Yorkshire Police, and the City of York Council.

He takes a keen interest in governance and volunteering, and has been involved in the below organisations at Board level:

  • Chair of Trustees, Draper Together (Elephant & Castle, London) 2015-2018
  • Chair of Governors, Alma Primary School (Enfield, London) 2009-2013 (one of the youngest Chairs of School Governors at 27)
  • Governor, The Gladys Aylward School (Enfield, London) 2009-2010

David is passionate about the community being the engine and driver of positive social and economic change, and he is excited to be part of North Yorkshire Sport as a charity that plays a very important role in North Yorkshire.

Nichola Skedgel

Nichola Skedgel

Trustee

Nichola was a former gymnast and athlete at grassroots level, dropping out of competitive sport at the age of 18, but her passion for sport did not diminish.

Nichola is the Competition Partnerships and Innovation Manager for England Athletics and has worked in a number of roles, from membership services to Major Events, for various athletics NGB’s over the last 20 years.

Nichola’s main experience lies within competition and events, and she is passionate about how events and competition can make a positive impact on people’s lives, not only for those competing and spectating, but also for the locality generally where the events are taking place. Nichola used to work in the Major Events Team at UK Athletics and brings that wealth of experience to her current role, which helps grassroots providers think innovatively about their competition formats to enhance experiences and encourage participation in the sport.

Since having children in 2015, Nichola has become increasingly aware of the positive impact that movement, not just competitive sport, can have on the mental and physical wellbeing of an individual. Nichola is passionate about activity being inclusive and a fundamental part of everyday life for people of all ages and abilities.

In her spare time, Nichola also volunteers for her children’s Primary School PTA, helping out with fundraising activities.

Jack Matthews

Trustee

Jack is Head of Delivery at the Football Foundation, the Charity of The Premier League, The FA and Government, helping communities build and develop football & multi-sport facilities through grant investment.

He has held various roles at the Foundation since joining in 2017, including leading the development of the Sport England National Lottery funded, Active Through Football programme, which aims to take a targeted place based approach to addressing physical inactivity in communities across England.

Jack worked for 3 County Football Associations, in East Riding, West Riding and Sheffield & Hallamshire for 8 years prior to joining the Foundation, with a remit of building strong club & league structures, developing new and flexible formats of the games, ensuring inclusive structures for all and supporting those with facility development aspirations.

A qualified coach, Jack has spent time coaching football and multi-sport activities both in the UK & America. Being active is a big part of Jack’s life, with running, golf and football taking up most of his free time, whilst exploring new activities and the great outdoors with his two young girls.

Andy Dukes

Trustee

Andy is the Youth Justice Team Manager for North Yorkshire as part of the wider Children and Young People’s Service of North Yorkshire County Council. Andy has worked within residential child care, practiced as a social worker and for the last twenty years has worked with young people who come into contact with the Police.

Andy is passionate about diverting young people from the criminal justice system and ensuring access to mainstream services to help young people make positive life choices leading away from crime.

Andy has been linked to North Yorkshire Sport as an advisor for many years before becoming a Trustee in 2020. He is the lead Safeguarding Trustee and a member of the HR Sub Group.

Sport has been a passion of his throughout his life, participating in football, rugby, cricket, badminton and squash before more latterly being a daily swimmer. His son is a senior British Athlete in the long jump.

Tony Stephens, North Yorkshire Sport Trustee

Tony Stephens

Trustee

Tony has over 37 years of experience of sports development, facility management and strategic planning gained in the public, private and voluntary sectors. In addition, he has extensive experience in cultural and education services covering museums, libraries and tourism.

A passionate advocate for sport as a driver for change and lifetime opportunity Tony has extensive coaching experience in the UK and abroad in football, cricket, basketball and general fitness and well-being.

Now, aside from retaining a strong interest in developing local junior cricket at club and district level, he tries to devote more time to his own well-being and keeping healthy.

He is a qualified Project Manager and sports governance specialist having also led a number of successful sports capital projects in his career totalling in excess of £50m.

Tony re-joined North Yorkshire Sport in 2018 having previously been a Board Member in his role of Head of Leisure at Harrogate Borough Council (2006-9).

He presently works as an external consultant and interim manager across the sports and culture sectors.
