Opening School Facilities

Opening Schools Facilities is a £57m Department for Education investment programme. It runs from 2022 - 2025 to meet the goals of the Government’s School Sport and Activity Action Plan.

The fund aims to help schools open their existing sport facilities outside of normal school times and is designed to encourage accessibility to facilities (including school swimming pools) to a broader range of young people.

It also aims to support the wider community by partnering with sporting organisations, who can help deliver activities in these settings.

Who can benefit?

Both primary and secondary schools are eligible for the Opening Schools Facilities funding. At North Yorkshire Sport, we are using data and consultation to inform us of the schools we would like to work with. As such, we will contact those schools whose students and local community we feel would benefit greatly from being a part of the programme.

North Yorkshire Sport will work closely with the selected Opening School Facilities schools to jointly construct a delivery plan that outlines how funding will be used to meet the programme aims and objectives, ensuring sustainability beyond the duration of the funding.
If you’re a school that is interested in being considered as part of the programme please contact our Education Manager, Niall O’Brien.

What does the Fund aim to do?

The objectives of the funding can be broadly split into four categories.

  1. To support schools to open their facilities outside of the normal school day (evenings, weekends, and holidays) to allow children & young people and the wider community to access more opportunities to be physically active.
  2. To open school swimming pools focusing on swimming and water safety lessons both during and outside the school day for pupils at their school and for pupils at other local schools.
  3. To provide participants with a range of stimulating and enjoyable opportunities to take part in physical activity and sport, in addition to that experienced within PE lessons and extra-curricular activities.
  4. To ensure participants are signposted to take part in the same or similar activities in their local community, following the end of their participation in the programme.

Impact of the funding across North Yorkshire

Here at North Yorkshire Sport we have worked closely with schools across the county to successfully deliver previous rounds of Opening Schools Facilities funding.
