Laura Young

Public Health Officer (NYC)

I have worked within a local authority sport development team, a national governing body, community clubs, and another Active Partnership before finding a home with the North Yorkshire Sport team in 2015. During my nearly nine years at North Yorkshire Sport, I have worked on club support programmes, Children and Young People programmes, and enjoyed being part of the FEAST and North Yorkshire Together team, which provides holiday activities for children on free school meals.

In April 2024, I took an opportunity to expand my experience, knowledge, and skills by diving into the world of public health. My new role is a partnership between North Yorkshire Council and North Yorkshire Sport, focusing on strengthening the relationships between the two organisations and supporting the development of a whole system physical activity and movement framework for North Yorkshire.

Despite being extremely active and part of the Isle of Man’s gymnastics team outside school hours, I very much disliked PE at school. This experience has helped me understand the importance of positive experiences in physical activity and the influence of those leading the activities. Nowadays, my body no longer allows me to bounce and flip around as I did at ten, so my activities mostly include yoga, walking, and chasing my kids around a play park. Over the next few years, I would like to do more paddleboarding and learn how to ski.
