North Yorkshire Sport has been a proud partner in the delivery of the Action Towards Inclusion Project for its entire six-year duration, to June 2023. The closure was due to European Social Funds ceasing, which was co-funder alongside the National Lottery and the LEP. We are grateful for the years it financed, enabling our small team of empathetic keyworkers to be 1-1 mentors to a total of X adults of working age that were out of work and struggling with their wellbeing. The goal has been to build a supportive relationship, that helped address the challenges to being work-ready. Poor physical and/or mental health was a common occurrence among those joining the project, often in combination with difficult circumstances such as caring responsibilities, isolation, immigration, or poverty.
Participants could self-refer onto the programme but the majority came via stakeholders such as social prescribers, Leaving Care Services, Citizens Advice Bureau, National Careers Service, and Job Centres (DWP).
The programme was designed flexibly to allow an unrushed person-centred approach to: facilitating personal and skills growth, actively building an understanding of wellbeing, specialist interventions to assess finances, or provide emotional counsel. A budget existed to fund justified items or services to improve participants’ prospects. Examples are clothes, travel costs, gym passes, laptops, protective equipment, course fees.
