North Yorkshire Sport has welcomed the news that David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, has been appointed as an advisor to the Sport England Board.
David will join Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England, in helping to make sure the needs and experiences of local communities are heard when national decisions are made about sport and physical activity.
The appointments are part of Sport England’s commitment to giving local communities a greater say in how sport and physical activity can improve health, bring people together and tackle inequalities.
For North Yorkshire Sport, this is a welcome step towards making sure national plans reflect the needs of people across York and North Yorkshire, particularly those who face the biggest barriers to being active.
David Watson, CEO of North Yorkshire Sport, said:
“I’m delighted that our Mayor, David Skaith, will be advising Sport England, alongside Mayor Helen Godwin.
At North Yorkshire Sport, we know how important it is that national decisions reflect what local communities need. This is a great opportunity to make sure local voices are heard.
David recognises and champions the important role that movement, activity and sport can play in improving health and wellbeing and the unique challenges and opportunities that our region faces.
His new role will help make sure the needs of people across York and North Yorkshire are considered, especially those who face the biggest barriers to being active.
I look forward to seeing how this helps us work together to create healthier, happier and more active communities”
North Yorkshire Sport works with local partners and communities to help more people enjoy the benefits of being active. The new advisory roles will help strengthen the links between this work at a local level and Sport England’s national priorities.
