A new £2.75 million Movement, Activity and Sport Fund has been launched to help more people across York and North Yorkshire live active, healthy lives.
Funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and managed by North Yorkshire Sport, the fund will support local organisations to deliver projects that tackle physical inactivity, promote inclusion, and improve wellbeing in communities across the region.
The fund forms part of the Mayor’s “Moving Forward” campaign, which aims to build healthier and more connected communities through everyday movement, active travel, and sport.

“Sport changed my life,” said David Skaith, Mayor of York & North Yorkshire.

“Beyond the health benefits,  movement, activity and sport helps build strong, connected communities — especially in rural areas. This fund is about backing the people and organisations who know their communities best, empowering them to create opportunities for everyone to get moving, meet new people, and thrive together.”

The Movement, Activity and Sport Fund will provide investment to:
  • Encourage more people to take part in movement, activity, and sport at all stages of life.
  • Support inclusive projects for women and girls, disabled people, and rural communities.
  • Invest in early intervention and prevention to improve long-term health outcomes.
  • Help organisations develop their workforce, build capacity, and sustain activity beyond the funding period.
Grants are available for both the sport and physical activity sector (e.g., sports clubs, foundations, and governing bodies) and the non-sport sector (e.g., charities, community groups, and local partnerships). Funding will support both revenue and capital projects — from new inclusive activities to community facility improvements — with awards ranging from £3,000 to £49,999.

David Watson, Chief Executive of North Yorkshire Sport and Chair of the Sports Steering Group, said: “The £2.75 million Movement, Activity and Sport Fund is a major investment in York and North Yorkshire’s health and wellbeing, reducing inequalities, building stronger communities, and increasing opportunities to be active.

“North Yorkshire Sport is delighted to be working alongside the Combined Authority to help more people, especially those facing barriers, access inclusive opportunities for movement, activity and sport.

“Our close working relationship and shared goals will ensure the fund transforms communities across our region, creating lasting opportunities for health, connection, inclusion and economic development.”

The first funding round opens 10 October 2025 and closes 7 December 2025, with decisions communicated in early 2026.
